The Hospitality Club is a huge network of enthusiastic travellers willing to help other travellers. Become yourself a member and other members might offer you a place on the floor, a bed or a separate room at their places or maybe just meet you for a good night out when you visit their cities. By the way, I'm a member myself since 2003 and if you ever come to the north of Portugal I might be able to host you through the club.

Owners of this company say they created Home Exchange as "a comfortable alternative to high priced hotels and typical tourist vacations, and a way to experience an area as a local, not a tourist." I must admit I'm not a member but it might be useful for somebody out there. It's not a free service, though.
